Chris Marker's "La Jetée" (1962)

This is a 26 minute-long science fiction film shot almost entirely of still images (and yes, I do know that movies are just lots of still images served with popcorn). Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys was based on this film and took many concepts directly from La Jetée. There was also a book published in 1996 (and now out of print) by Zone Books which shows all the stills from the film along with the subtitles. Sounds amazing.
